JOSE, CA -- (INTERNET WIRE) -- 04/18/2001 --
The
Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA) announced today
that 93 products have passed the rigorous Wi-Fi certification testing
- surpassing everyone's expectations and clearly establishing Wi-Fi
as the world's leading wireless LAN standard.
"It has taken only one year for Wi-Fi to become the global standard
for wireless LAN interoperability. The Wi-Fi movement and certification
process has served to bring together a previously fragmented industry,"
said WECA's Vice- Chairman David Cohen. "We have seen a complete
set of industry players from chip producers to integrated manufacturers
and consumer product companies put significant effort behind producing
Wi-Fi wireless LAN products. We expect continued growth of Wi-Fi
wireless LANs now that the industry is producing products based
on a single wireless LAN standard in the 2.4 GHz Band," continued
Cohen.
Products
awarded the Wi-Fi logo have undergone strict, rigorous and independent
testing at Agilent's Silicon Valley Networking Lab (SVNL). Testing
usually takes two to four days per product to complete. SVNL has
built a reputation for providing objective, high-quality performance,
interoperability and functional testing services.

About
the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance
The
Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA) is a nonprofit organization
formed in 1999 to certify interoperability of Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b)
products and to promote Wi-Fi as the global, wireless LAN standard
across all market segments.
WECA
has defined a test suite that defines how member products are tested
to certify that they are interoperable with other Wi-Fi-certified
products. An independent test lab, Agilent's Silicon Valley Networking
Lab, Inc. (www.svnl.com), conducts the testing. When a product successfully
passes the test, the company will be granted the Wi-Fi seal of interoperability
and may display the Wi-Fi logo on that product and its corresponding
collateral material.
This
testing assures that products bearing the Wi-Fi logo will work with
each other.
Membership in WECA is open to all companies who support the Wi-Fi
standard, including any member manufacturer that would like to submit
its Wi-Fi-based product for interoperability testing. WECA now comprises
80 members.
